Jennifer Donnelly’s new book Deep Blue just recently came out, and its an awesome read! Its not quite summer here yet, but I’m getting ready by spending some fictional time at the sea 🙂 Her mermaid adventure book gave me some great inspiration for these easy to do nails. Read on for more info on the book and a photo how-to…
STEP 1
Paint your nails a minty green color (Deborah Lippmann Flowers in her Hair). I took color inspiration from the novel’s book cover, but feel free to switch it up! You want your background color to be a lighter shade.
STEP 2
I absolutely love doing the watercolor technique – its a great background for nail art and goes perfectly with this under the sea novel! I used a medium shade turquoise color (Sally Hansen Please Sea Me…isn’t the name perfect for these nails?!) and dotted 2-3 dots per nail using the brush from the polish bottle. Then you grab a paintbrush dipped in polish remover to dilute the spots giving them this cool effect!
STEP 3
I continued the watercolor technique using 2 other colors…a dark turquoise (OPI Ski Teal We Drop) and a green (Orly Fresh). I wanted a hint of green so its reminiscent of the ocean with a hint of seaweed!
STEP 4
Next I painted on the mermaid scales using a light blue (Azature Light Blue Diamond). Be sure to really space out the scales so you can see the colors underneath. You can also add a touch of sparkle to the scales like I did in the first photo of this post!

Could you show a video tutorial of how to do step 2 of the mermaid scale nails? I’m not quite under standing how you do it from reading the steps.
Here is a tutorial I did using the same technique just a different design! 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmktFGJtzZc
